Indian athlete Sunil Kumar, playing pole vault on loan from the organisers, won the gold medal in the decathlon at the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships here. The 18-year-old Indian athlete’s five-metre long pole vault (bamboo) was refused by the airlines from Delhi due to a technical issue. Despite this, Sunil won the yellow medal with his personal best performance of 7003 in the 10 event decathlon.
The Athletics Federation of India had asked the organizers to provide pole vault to Sunil. The Indian player performed brilliantly in 100m, discus throw and javelin throw. However, could not do that much better in the rest of the competitions. He finished fourth in pole vault (Banskud). In the women’s high jump, Pooja won the silver medal with a throw of 1.82 metres. The other silver went to Bushra Khan in the 3000m race with a timing of 9:41.47. The 4x100m women’s relay team took the bronze with a time of 45.36.
