Wrestlers Protest Live: What is the matter?
- Indian wrestlers sat on a dharna for the first time on 18 January at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Wrestlers had accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation of India, of sexual harassment. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur spoke to the wrestlers and the strike was called off on 21 January. Brij Bhushan was separated from the working of the wrestling association and a committee was formed to investigate the allegations against him.
- By April the inquiry committee released its report, but the report was not made public. In this situation, the wrestlers once again sat on a dharna at Jantar Mantar on 23rd April. The wrestlers turned to the Supreme Court. After this Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan. An FIR was registered under the Paxo Act.
- The wrestlers stuck to their demand for Brij Bhushan’s arrest and continued their protest. At the same time, Brij Bhushan kept calling himself innocent. Wrestlers tried to march during the inauguration of the new parliament building on 28 May. Then the police took the wrestlers into custody. Their luggage was removed from Jantar Mantar and all the wrestlers were released by the night. FIR was also registered against many wrestlers.
- Now the Delhi Police says that if the wrestlers seek permission to protest at a suitable place other than Jantar Mantar, they will get it, but they cannot protest at this place.
