How to protect your smartphone from hacking and keep data safe

Most of us want to use our smartphone in a comfortable way. If there is no lock on it then great. Just open easily. But doing so is dangerous. Many thieves and hackers are on the lookout for such devices, so that they can steal the financial and personal information of the common people.

For example, having your email account hacked increases the risk of leaking banking and other sensitive passwords.

By the way, with minor cleanliness, you can avoid many diseases. In the same way, in this digital age, with the help of ‘cyber hygiene’, any major danger can be averted.

lock your phone with passcode
Now you do not leave the door of your house open in your absence. Not using a passcode on the phone is also the same.

Using a four-digit passcode along with activating the self-destruct feature is a very secure method. In Self Destruct feature, repeatedly entering wrong passcode in your phone will completely disappear the phone data. Using a 6 digit passcode makes it 100 times more difficult to guess. This can be made more difficult by using letters and characters. This option is available on both Android and iPhone.

Users can activate the iPhone’s Self Destruct feature by going to the Touch ID & Passcode section in Settings. After entering the wrong passcode 10 times, the phone will automatically delete the entire data. Keep in mind that even if you forget the passcode or your child keeps on punching numbers by mistake while playing, the data will be deleted. Android also has such a feature.

use encryption
The good thing with the iPhone is that it runs encryption by default. This means that the data stored on the phone cannot be retrieved. Or it cannot be read on another computer. Unless the phone is unblocked, the information taken from the phone is scattered and not readable.

In Android, you have to activate it by going to Settings. Google’s policy mentions providing encryption. But only 2.3 Android devices are running in this version in the market.

set up device finder
Find My iPhone isn’t just for finding your phone when you can’t find it.

If your device goes missing for some reason, then Lost Mode will come in handy. Doing so will lock your phone screen with a passcode.

This app comes with the iPhone, but you have to setup it before you can lose your phone. You can search for the Find iPhone app in the Extras folder. Activation Lock will prevent a thief from selling your phone. For that the phone is not even usable. It cannot be reactivated without knowing the Apple ID.

If all these tips fail, you can also delete the phone’s data through your computer. However, doing so will cause all data to be lost.

There is absolutely no such option in Android phones. But you can also use many third party apps along with Google’s Android Device Manager app.

back up your phone
If you have to delete the phone data from the remote system under compulsion, then it will prove to be a good habit to keep backing up the phone. By doing this you will not lose photos or any important data.

Keep in mind that you will need to have Find My iPhone and Android Device Manager already installed. You will not be able to do anything once you have lost your phone.

Always Update Software
Software updates always address vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers to tamper with your device.

Apple updates are constantly available on the iPhone. However, it is a bit tricky on Android systems. Google releases updates for mobile manufacturers. After this, these companies decide on how to deliver the update to the user according to their convenience. But whenever you are asked for an update, make sure to install it.
