Olympic silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu also made a grand debut at the 36th National Games. He won the gold medal in the weightlifting 49 kg category on Friday. Mirabai won the gold medal by lifting a total weight of 191 kg. Mira won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics as well as a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this year. He lifted 84 kg in the snatch round and 107 kg in the clean and jerk round at the National Games.

This is Mirabai’s second national game. In the final, she defeated Sanjita Chanu by a margin of four kg. Sanjita lifted a total weight of 187 kg. In the snatch round, Sanjita won the silver medal by lifting 82 kg and in the clean and jerk round by lifting 105 kg. On the other hand, Odisha’s Sneha Soren won the bronze medal. Sneha lifted 73 kg in snatch round and 96 kg in clean and jerk round. Mirabai revealed that she was undergoing treatment for an injury to her left wrist, which is why she did not go for her third attempt in both the rounds. After the match Meera said- I had recently injured my left wrist during training at NIS, Patiala. After that I made sure not to risk it any more. In December, I have to play the World Championship as well. Mirabai said- It is a proud moment for me to represent Manipur in the National Games. The excitement was doubled when I was asked to lead the contingent at the opening ceremony. He said that usually it is a challenge to attend the opening ceremony as I have my event the very next day, but this time I felt that I should challenge myself. Mirabai aims to win a gold medal at the World Championships this year and the Asian Games next year. At the same time, Sanjita, who won silver, said – This is a special moment for me, but congratulations to Mirabai. He deserves all the praise for his brilliant effort. It feels great to compete in national sports and represent my state.
