Traveling Far From Your Home And Locality Good For Health Says Study

A study suggests that people who live away from home and travel have better health than those who live closer to home. According to a new study led by UCL researchers, people who travel outside their region feel healthier and happier. Whereas people who roam in or around their locality do not feel much healthier. For the paper published in Transport and Health, the researchers analyzed travel in the northern region of England, where people suffer poorer health than the rest of England, and many rural and suburban areas also have poor access to transport. Very bad.

The researchers looked specifically at those facing multiple barriers to travel outside the local area. Lead author Dr Paulo Ances (UCL Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources) said: “We sought to find relationships between barriers to traveling more than 15 miles from home, demographics and location, and also found that How people viewed their own health in social participation. We found that people who go out and travel outside their local area tend to be better at social involvement and have better health.

online survey done

The researchers conducted an online survey of 3014 nationally representative residents in the North of England. The survey clearly highlights the direct and indirect effects of barriers to people traveling outside their local area. The study found that the relationship between barriers to travel, social participation and health is stronger in people over the age of 55. Dr Ancis explained that those over the age of 55 are more likely to face barriers such as limited mobility to travel. They may also suffer from loneliness. People belonging to this group lack different places to travel. Contact with friends is also not much, participation in clubs and societies is also less.

older generations left behind

Rural and suburban areas in the north of England are also more likely to lose population, as more young people move to cities in search of work and better travel options. However, due to the limited transportation options in these areas, the older generations were left behind. The places they can go are limited. Due to this, their social participation decreased and the level of health also fell.
