Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Has Left Singapore

Sri Lanka CrisisFormer Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has to leave Singapore due to legal reasons. Singapore’s immigration officials said on Thursday that they had left the country after a certain period of time, according to AFP news agency. Now Gotabaya has taken refuge in Thailand.

Rajapaksa boarded a flight from Singapore to Bangkok. The Thailand government confirmed a day earlier that it had received a request from the current Sri Lankan government for Rajapaksa to visit the country. During his stay in Thailand, Rajapaksa will explore the possibility of finding asylum for himself in a third country.

Rajapaksa, who is living in Singapore after leaving the country amid anti-government protests in Sri Lanka in July, was seeking asylum in Thailand as his Singapore visa expired on Thursday. He reached Maldives on July 13 and then went to Singapore where he announced his resignation amid protests over the country’s economic crisis.

sought asylum on humanitarian grounds
The Bangkok Post newspaper, quoting Prayut, wrote that this is an issue of humanity. We have said that this is a temporary stay. No (political) activity is allowed and this will help them in searching a country for asylum. According to the news, Foreign Minister D Pramudvinai said that former President Rajapaksa can stay in Thailand for 90 days as he still holds a diplomatic passport.
