Rajapaksa boarded a flight from Singapore to Bangkok. The Thailand government confirmed a day earlier that it had received a request from the current Sri Lankan government for Rajapaksa to visit the country. During his stay in Thailand, Rajapaksa will explore the possibility of finding asylum for himself in a third country.

Rajapaksa, who is living in Singapore after leaving the country amid anti-government protests in Sri Lanka in July, was seeking asylum in Thailand as his Singapore visa expired on Thursday. He reached Maldives on July 13 and then went to Singapore where he announced his resignation amid protests over the country’s economic crisis.

No (political) activity is allowed and this will help them in searching a country for asylum. According to the news, Foreign Minister D Pramudvinai said that former President Rajapaksa can stay in Thailand for 90 days as he still holds a diplomatic passport.
