Story of Mahatma Buddha and Seth

Once Mahatma Gautam Buddha had come to a city. People from the city and its surrounding came from far and wide to listen to the discourse of Mahatma Buddha. The wealthy Seth of the city was also present among all the people. The wealthy Seth had brought many gifts and messages for the king.

When Dhanadhya Seth met Mahatma Buddha, he told Buddha that he is such a rich and influential person of this city. Seth told Buddha that, I did many things for this city. I got many schools and hospitals built. Even this platform and the precious throne on which you are sitting have also been prepared by me. Buddha was quietly listening to Seth’s words. After meeting and talking to Buddha, when Seth started going back, Buddha said, whatever you have brought for me, leave everything here. Do not take anything back with you.

Seth was surprised and said, Yes Mahatma! I had brought all these things for you only and am leaving here. Then Buddha said, none of the material things you have brought are of any use to me. My purpose will be fulfilled only when you will leave your ego here along with these things. Mahatma realized his mistake after listening to Buddha’s words and from that day he took a vow to give up his ego.
