Lakshita Vinod Sandila won gold in the women’s 4x400m relay team and 1500m as India finished third in the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships. India finished third with six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals. With Japan (14 gold, 4 silver and five bronze) and China (11 gold, five silver and three bronze) standing first and second respectively.

Lakshita improved by two seconds

India’s Lakshita Vinod Sandila clocked a personal best time of 4:24.23 to clinch the gold medal in the women’s 1500m on the final day of the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships here on Wednesday.

Sandila’s earlier best of 4:26.48 was improved by almost two seconds to win India’s fifth gold medal in the championships. Later, the women’s quartet led by Rejona Malik Heena won the gold with a timing of 3:40.49. Kazakhstan (3:46.19) won the silver and Korea (3:47.46) won the bronze. The men’s relay team took the silver medal with a time of 3:08.78.

Mehdi Hasan won the bronze medal in the men’s 1500m by clocking 3:56.01. Shivaji Parashu Madappagoudra won the silver medal in the men’s 5000 meters with a timing of 14 minutes 49.05 seconds. On the first day of the competition on Sunday, Rejoana Mallik Heena and Bharatpreet Singh won gold in women’s 400m and men’s discus throw respectively. Shot putter Siddharth Chowdhary won gold on Monday while Sunil Kumar won gold in decathlon on Tuesday. A 45-member Indian team, which included 19 women players, took part in the four-day competition.
