Former Indian football team captain Bhaichung Bhutia on Thursday re-nominated for the post of President of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Bhutia will face a tough challenge from BJP leader and former Mohun Bagan-East Bengal goalkeeper Kalyana Choubey in the elections to be held on September 2. Bhutia’s name was proposed by the Andhra Football Association. At the same time, Rajasthan Football Association approved it.
Bhutia, 45, is a Padma Shri awardee and is a member of several committees, including the Mission Olympic Department. Bhutia told news agency PTI after the nomination, “I have filed my nomination for the post of AIFF President. I think I am the best candidate for this position. I have played so many matches for the country and for top clubs and I know a little bit about the administration as well because I am in the Ministry of Sports, in the Department of Mission Olympic and many other committees. I want Indian football to reach new heights.
Bhutia had earlier also filed his nomination for the post of president. Her name was then proposed by her former teammate Deepak Mandal while the eminent women’s footballer Madhu Kumari approved it.
