When the wrestlers protesting against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan met Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on June 7 (Wednesday), many things were agreed upon. The government had sought time from the wrestlers till June 15. The government has lived up to its promise. Whether it is a matter of charge sheet against Indian Wrestling Association President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh or elections in the Wrestling Association, the demands of the wrestlers have been met.

What was decided in the conversation?

The wrestlers had met Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday (June 7). In this meeting which lasted for about six hours, the two sides agreed on many matters. The Sports Minister had informed after the meeting that in conversation with the players, there was discussion on filing charge sheet in the case of sexual harassment by June 15. Apart from this, there was also talk of adding two coaches to the ad-hoc committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). At the same time, the wrestling association elections should be held as soon as possible.

What happened till now?

  • A charge sheet was filed on Thursday in the case of sexual harassment against Brijbhushan Singh Sharan. At the same time, in the case of sexual harassment of a minor wrestler, the police have filed a closure report to close the case.
  • On Tuesday (June 13) the dates for the elections of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) were announced. Voting for all the posts will be held on July 6. The results will also come out on the same day.
  • Two coaches were added to the ad-hoc committee of the IOA. Coaches Gyan Singh and Ashok Garg joined the committee.

Wrestlers had opened a front against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh in January

The country’s top wrestlers were openly fighting against Brij Bhushan Singh for 138 days. For the first time on January 18, Pahawan sat on dharna and on April 23 started the second dharna. After this the wrestlers faced the weather, clashed with the police. There was also an FIR against the wrestlers, but the protests continued. However, after a meeting between the wrestlers and Home Minister Amit Shah, the story changed and the wrestlers returned to work. After that, in the meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, many issues were discussed and some matters were agreed upon. Then the wrestlers agreed not to protest till June 15.
