Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and America’s Sofia Kenin advanced to the third round with wins on the fourth day of Wimbledon tennis on Thursday. America’s Sofia Kenin, who reached the qualifying round, defeated China’s Wang 6-4, 6-3, winning her second match in a row in the main draw. Svitolina defeated Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 in a three-set match in the second round.

in four year old form

Svitolina returned to the Tour after giving birth to a daughter in April. In the previous Grand Slam, she was successful in reaching the quarterfinals. She defeated 43-year-old five-time champion Venus Williams of America in her first round here. The 28-year-old Svitolina easily took control of Mertens with two breaks in the first set. The former world number three has shown glimpses of the same form she displayed in 2019 when she reached the semi-finals. In the second set, Mertens regained his rhythm and took a 5-0 lead. In the second game of the third set, Svitolina earned a break point and then took control to seal the set and the match.

Sofia-Alina clash in the third round

Former Australian champion Kenin, who won three matches in the qualifiers, is currently ranked 128 but was once ranked world number four. In her first match of the main draw, she caused an upset by defeating seventh seed Coco Gough of America. It was Kenin’s third consecutive win in singles against Weng, who won the doubles title with Su Wei at the French Open last month. Although Sofia hit fewer winners against the Chinese player, there were fewer unforced errors. Four out of seven break points were converted. Kenin will next face Ukraine’s Elina Stitolina in the third round. He has had five encounters with Svitolina, in which Svitolina has managed to win three times. All these five matches took place in 2019.

Wawrinka, 38, in the third round for the first time in three years

In the men’s section, 38-year-old Stan Wawrinka defeated 15-year-old Argentine Thomas Etcheverry 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. For the first time in three years, Wawrinka has reached the third round of a Grand Slam. Wawrinka, ranked 88, has been eliminated in the first or second round in the last six Grand Slams. Now he will face the challenge of defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who is aiming for his eighth title in Wimbledon. However, he was defeated by Wawrinka in the 2015 French Open final. At one point, Wawering was ranked among the top four players in the world. He won the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open.
