Expansion
Wimbledon organizers the All England Club have announced that this year Wimbledon’s app and website will be replaced by AI (artificial intelligence) commentators in female and male voices. Live broadcasts and commentary of Wimbledon matches began on the BBC in 1937, but this will be the first time an AI commentator will do both writing and speaking. It is being told that no input will be given to the AI commentator from the human side. He himself will use his intelligence. Experts say that from where will AI commentator bring language, tone and sense of humor like humans.
Veteran cricket commentator Sushil Doshi told Amar Ujala – New technology should be welcomed. People especially the young generation are attracted towards new things. He said, but there is a doubt that how the AI based commentator will be able to bring the language, tone of speech and sense of humor to humans. He said – people like to listen to other commentators including Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Harsha Bhogle. If there is an odd situation during the match, then at that time will the AI commentator be able to communicate like humans. Many such questions need to be debated on a large scale.
AI commentators have been prepared in unique language
All England Club is going to launch AI commentator with the help of IBM. For this, the AI commentator has been prepared in the unique language of tennis. Its data will include where the ball is. What kind of shots the players are playing. Female and male commentators will be used during the commentary, but there will be no human input on the voices.
AI can also handle the work of line judges
Technology has been used from time to time in world’s important sports like cricket, football, tennis etc. Along with Hawk Eye, WAR (Video Assistant Referee) is being used a lot. It is believed that AI-made artificial judges will soon be replaced by line judges in tennis. The AI anchor or commentator will serve as a substitute for, rather than a replacement for, a human, said Kevin Ferrar of IBM Sports Partnerships. For now the AI commentator will be used for daily highlights etc. on the app and website. Later on the BBC, the broadcaster of Wimbledon, tried it out in general matches such as junior, senior and wheelchair tennis.
AI commentator can also voice John McEnroe and Bill Threlfall
It is believed that AI commentators will be able to commentate in the exact voice of many legendary commentators such as legendary tennis player John McEnroe and the late Bill Threlfall. Although Threlfall is dead, there may be some problems with imitating his voice.
Successful use of AI commentator in golf
The AI commentator was first used in sports at the US Masters golf tournament in April this year. American golfing legend Jack Nicklaus had an AI-powered animation capable of talking to fans and answering golfing questions.
