What is Metastatic Melanoma?
Metastatic melanoma is also known as stage IV melanoma. This is an advanced form of skin cancer, which occurs when melanoma cells spread from the primary tumor to other parts of the body. This spread can also occur through the lymphatic system or blood stream. Lungs, liver, brain, bones and other organs can be affected by this. Melanoma originates in melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. Early stage melanoma remains limited to the skin. If it is caught at this place, it can be easily treated. Otherwise, if it metastasizes after this, treatment becomes more difficult.
Causes of melanoma cancer
What are the symptoms of melanoma?
1. New lump or wound on the skin
2. Persistent cough or difficulty in breathing when lungs are affected
3. If cancer spreads to the brain, problems like headache, memory loss and seizures occur.
4. Jaundice and swelling in the stomach when cancer spreads to the liver.
Diagnosis and treatment of melanoma
This cancer is identified through imaging tests like CT scan, MRI and PET scan. Apart from this, biopsy is done to identify suspected metastases. In its treatment, doctors can prescribe those medicines, which help in stopping melanoma cells by targeting specific CT scan. Apart from this, it is treated with immunotherapy medicines, chemotherapy, surgery or radiation therapy.
