Relation of bath in Ganga and churning of ocean
Ganga bath is considered the most sacred bath in Hinduism. The sanctity of bathing in the Ganges and other rivers is related to the churning of the ocean. According to the legend, when the Devas and the Asuras together churned the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari came out of the ocean with an urn of nectar. To get the Amrit Kalash, a dispute broke out between the deities and the asuras and started snatching. Meanwhile, a few drops of nectar from the Kalash fell in holy rivers like Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. These rivers became holy because of the falling of nectar. This is the reason why there is a tradition of river bath and especially Ganga bath on festivals, full moon, new moon and special dates.
