According to historian Padmashree Yogesh Praveen, the tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal in Lucknow started 400 years ago at the time of Mughal ruler Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah. It is said that the health of Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah’s son got very bad. Even after getting the son treated at many places, there was no improvement in his health. Then some people asked Rubia, Begum of Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah, to go to the ancient Hanuman Temple in Aliganj, Lucknow and pray for her son’s well-being.

After this Nawab Mohammed Shah Ali and Begum went to the ancient Hanuman temple at Aliganj. He prayed in the temple and prayed for the son’s recovery. After a few days, the son’s health improved and gradually the son became completely healthy. In this happiness, Nawab and Begum got the ancient Hanuman temple in Aliganj repaired. The work of the temple was completed in the month of Jyestha. After this, he distributed jaggery syrup and prasad in the whole city. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal started in the city of Lucknow.

Other religious beliefs related to Bada Mangal

  • According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the first meeting of Lord Rama and Hanuman took place on a Tuesday in the month of Jyestha. That’s why every Tuesday of this month is called Bada Mangal or Budhwa Mangal.
  • There is also a religious belief related to celebrating Bada Mangal that, on the first Tuesday of Jyestha month, Lakshman ji had settled the city of Lucknow and for the first time he started the tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal. Since then, till today, the tradition of celebrating Bada Mangal is going on in Lucknow.
  • According to some experts, Bada Mangal was started in 1584 from Chhanchi Kuan Hanuman Temple located at Medical College Square. It is a belief that Hanuman ji had appeared to Goswami Tulsidas ji on the Tuesday of Jyestha month inside this temple. It is said that Tulsidas had started this tradition, which is continuing till date.
