World number one and two-time defending champion Inga Swiatek was forced out of her Italian Open quarter-finals with a thigh injury. Swiatek decided to retire in the third set against Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina when the score was tied at 2–2.
Swiatek won the first set 6–2 while Rybakina won the second set 7–6(3) to take the match to a deciding third set. The injury has also raised doubts over Swiatek’s participation in the French Open starting May 28 where the Polish player is the defending champion. This is the third time Rybakina has defeated Swiatek.
