Indian hockey lost Rajeev Mishra, one of the finest talents in 1998. He was found dead under suspicious circumstances at his residence in Sarsauli area of Varanasi. He was 46 years old. He is survived by his wife and two children. According to sources, he probably died a few days ago and on the information of the neighbors, the police removed his dead body due to foul smell.
Rajeev, posted as Chief Inspector Ticket in Varanasi in the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway, often lived alone. Rajeev, who performed brilliantly in the 1997 Junior World Cup in London, had a huge fan following at one point of time.
His childhood coach Premshankar Shukla said Rajeev’s untimely demise was a big blow to Indian hockey. He was an exceptional player with great skills. It was Shukla who brought him from Kolkata to Varanasi at the age of 13.
