Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic has booked her place in the women’s singles final of the French Open. Muchova ousted world number-2 player Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday (June 8). Muchova pulled off a miracle in the final set after trailing 2-5 to save a match point against Belarus’ Sabalenka. Muchova has reached the final of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Muchova, ranked 43rd, defeated Australian Open winner Sabalenka 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (5/7), 7-5. The match between the two players lasted for three hours and 13 minutes. Muchova will face defending champion Iga Swiatek or Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final. “It’s unbelievable,” Muchova said after the win. I just kept fighting. I don’t want to appear arrogant. I just keep working on my game.
Muchova made three players a victim of vicissitudes
Sabalenka is not the first player to fall prey to a rout by Muchova. Prior to that, Muchova had upset eighth seed Maria Sakkari in the first round. At the same time, in the quarter-finals, he ousted 2021 runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Sabalenka’s winning streak broken in Grand Slam
The loss for Sabalenka snapped her 12-match winning streak at Grand Slams. He paid a heavy price for 53 unforced errors. Muchova saved nine out of 13 break points.
