Dnyaneshwari Yadav of Chhattisgarh’s Bhondia area was the highlight of the first day of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship. Dnyaneshwari, daughter of an electrical mechanic, who started weightlifting in very adverse circumstances, won the senior category by defeating Mirabai Chanu’s 49 kg gold contender Jhimba Dalbehra, and also became the winner in the junior category. India won all the gold medals at stake on the first day of the championship being played at the Gautam Budh Nagar University. The upset of the day was the defeat of junior world champion Senapati Gurunaidu. He was defeated by Mukund Ahir in the 55 weight category.
Dnyaneshwari lifted 176 kg
Dnyaneshwari, who had won a silver in the Junior World Championships last year, successfully completed all the six lifts of snatch and clean and jerk. He lifted a total of 176 kg including 78 kg in snatch and 98 kg in clean and jerk. At the same time, the membrane could lift 169 kg. He won silver. Koel Bar won gold in the youth category by lifting 152 kg in this weight.
Komal and Mukund also won gold
India’s Jyoshna Sabar won the gold in the girls’ 40kg by lifting 116kg. He defeated Sumona (107 kg) of Bangladesh. In the youth category of 45 weight category, Ashmita Dhone of India defeated Malta’s Kim Lagana (134 kg) with a lift of 136 kg. Ashmita also won gold in the junior category. In the senior category of the same weight, Komal Kohar of India defeated Srimali Divisekara of Sri Lanka with 146 with a weight of 154 kg.
In the senior men’s 55 weight category, Mukund Ahir (India, 106+133) lifted a total of 239 kg to defeat Mohammad Rahman Taj (207) of Bangladesh. He pulled off a big upset by defeating Gurunaidu Senapati in the junior 228kg category. In the youth category of the same weight, Tomchow Meetei of India won the gold with 229 kg. Here also Naidu finished second.
