For the first time in the history of the World Boxing Championships, Indian boxers have assured three medals. Deepak Bhuria (51) of Haryana, Mohammad Hussamuddin (57) of Army and Nishant Dev (71) of Haryana created history by entering the semi-finals. All these three boxers are assured of at least a bronze medal. Earlier in 2019, Amit Panghal’s silver and Manish Kaushik’s bronze have been the country’s best performances. All the three boxers have a chance to reach the finals.
Hussamuddin got victory in a tough fight
Deepak easily defeated Nurzhigit Dyushebayev of Kyrgyzstan 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the 51 weight category included in the Paris Olympics. Such was Deepak’s dominance that in the final round the referee had to count twice against the rival boxer. Deepak will play Benama of France in the last four. Hussamuddin, who won two bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games, defeated fifth seed J Diaz Ibanez of Bulgaria 4-3 in a hard-fought last-eight match. He will play Cuba’s Sandel Horta in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, 22-year-old national champion Nishant Dev defeated Cuba’s Jorge Cuellar 5-0. In the last World Championship, Nishant had lost in the quarterfinals. Nishant will play Asian champion Aslan Shimbergenov of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals.
Deepak had to sell newspapers for boxing
Hisar (Haryana) K. Deepak’s early life was very troubled. Deepak started boxing in 2008, but the very next year he left the sport due to financial difficulties. Coach Rajesh Sheoran brought him back into the sport. After this he got injured again and had to sell newspapers in 2015 to continue boxing. After joining the Madras Engineering Group from 2016, his position changed and since then he has not looked back.
