Jhansi’s Shaili Singh, who came into limelight after winning a silver medal in the Under-20 World Athletics Championships, won a bronze medal in her first outdoor competition at the senior level. Shelly jumped 6.65m in the long jump in the Golden Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Shaily cleared 6.65m in the very first round, which turned out to be her best jump at a gold level event in World Athletics.
Has jumped 6.76 meters in the last month
Last month, Shelly had done her best performance by jumping 6.76 meters in the Indian Grand Prix. This is the best Indian performance since Anju Bobby George’s 6.83m. Here she finished 11 cm behind her personal best. She was also helped by a slight breeze while winning the bronze medal. By the third round, Shelly was in the lead.
Germany’s Maryse Luzzolo won the gold with a throw of 6.79m, while Australia’s Brooke Bushcuell won the silver with a throw of 6.77m. Shelly had won silver at the Under-20 World Athletics in 2021 with a throw of 6.59m. Shaili had finished fifth in Asian Indoor Athletics with a throw of 6.27m.
‘Winning bronze is a big achievement’
Style icon Anju Bobby George said, “Winning a bronze at the Golden Grand Prix is a great achievement. She is now 19 years old and was the youngest athlete in the competition. The athletes who won gold and silver are in their 30s. I had also won the gold medal in the same event in 2004. The future of the genre is very bright.
