“The door from which the ascetic returns empty-handed, good luck also turns away from that door”, says Ravana to Janaki in the guise of a monk. Hearing this, Janaki comes out of Laxman Rekha and Ravana picks her up and flies towards Lanka. From here begins the story of Adipurush, directed by Om Raut, and ends with the slaying of Ravana. Sundar Kand, Aranya Kand and Lanka Kand have been described in the film.
It is mentioned in the very beginning of the film that the director has taken some creative liberties here. So, please read Valmiki’s epic to understand Ramayana better. There is no doubt that we all are familiar with the whole story of Ramayana somewhere and also emotionally attached. Here again the director had nothing new to say, so it was important how it was presented. Today, when cinema has become technically strong, here too heavy VFX was used to tell the story of Ram-Siya, but was this attempt successful?

direction and technical side
It is not easy for any director to cover an epic like Ramayana in 3 hours. Om Raut took that risk and came up with Ramayan in a completely new way. But the biggest shortcoming in the film is the emotion. No matter how much you fill any story with VFX, but if the story does not connect with you on an emotional level, then the film cannot be successful. The USP of Adipurush should have been its story, but the writer-director made the screenplay average. It would not be wrong to say that the film is neither strong in writing nor technically. The dialogues of the film are so ineffective that none of the characters leave an impression on you. The entire film you wait for the climax, when Ram and Ravana will come face to face in the battlefield, but that scene is shot in such an average way that it just ends up being a disappointment. The special thing is that there is no high point anywhere in the film.
acting
The way the story of the film runs flat from beginning to end. In the same way all the characters also move. Prabhas as Sriram tries to maintain charm and sharpness in his persona, but the screenplay is so loose and the characters are so averagely shaped that they have little to show for it. Seeing Prabhas on many occasions, Bahubali will be remembered. Kriti Sanon looks gorgeous as Janki. But her weak chemistry with Prabhas has not made the story effective. Devdutt Nag as Lord Hanuman is good, but the dialogues given to him are such that you bang your head. Laxman turned Sunny Singh looks lost in himself. Full marks can be given to Saif Ali Khan for his performance as Ravana. However, more work should have been done on his look.

If you have the enthusiasm to watch Ramayana as an epic with devotional spirit, then this film may disappoint you. The film has a thrill factor which keeps you hooked to it, but emotions are sorely lacking. 2.5 stars for Om Raut’s Adipurush from Filmbeat.
