Spain won the UEFA Nations League football title for the first time after defeating Croatia 5–4 in the penalty shootout in the final. The score was 0–0 after regulation time, and extra time saw no goals after which the match went to a penalty shootout. Spain’s victory was marked by a stellar performance from goalkeeper Unai Simeone, who denied Croatia twice during the shootout.
Meanwhile, Croatia and their experienced captain Luka Modric, 37, still have to wait for their first international trophy. When the score was tied 3–3 during the shootout, goalkeeper Simeone prevented Croatia’s Lovro Majer from scoring. Then the score was 4-4, so Simone did not allow Bruno Petkovic to score. Then Dani Carjaval scored a goal to give the team a 5-4 victory. The teams of Spain and Croatia kept trying to score goals till the stipulated time, but could not succeed in it.
Italy ranked third
In the third-place match, Italy defeated the Netherlands 3–2 to take third place. Federico DiMarco (6th minute), Davide Fatesi (20th minute) and Federico Chiesa (72nd minute) scored for Italy. While Steven Bergavin (68th minute) and Georginio Wijnaldum (89th minute) scored for the Netherlands, but it was not enough to win.
