Tennis legend Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the hard court tournament starting next week in Cincinnati. In fact, he is not allowed to travel in the US due to lack of anti-coronavirus vaccine. He will also not be able to play in the US, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year to be held in New York from 29 August.
The 35-year-old Serbia’s Djokovic, who won 21 men’s singles Grand Slam titles, said he would not be vaccinated against the disease caused by the coronavirus, even if he is not allowed to play in some tournaments. Djokovic is one title behind Rafael Nadal (22 Grand Slam trophies).

Djokovic also missed the Australian Open this year because of not being vaccinated. In the Australian Open, he could not play even after reaching Australia. The matter even reached the court. Djokovic was not allowed to play, citing the rules. Before the US Open, he was supposed to take part in two tournaments, including Montreal, but he could not play. Foreign nationals are not allowed to enter the United States and Canada without getting vaccinated. So travel restrictions have been cited as the reason behind Cincinnati’s withdrawal from the tournament.

Djokovic said he was looking forward to playing in the US Open. For this, the policy of the government would have to be changed, he said. The US Tennis Association said it would follow the government’s policy. Djokovic, who won the US Open title three times in 2010, 2015 and 2018, was runner-up last year. He was defeated by Daniil Medvedev of Russia.
