US-Indian Origin Richard Verma: Indian-American Richard Verma was on Thursday (March 30) appointed by the US Senate to the top post in the State Department. The US Senate has appointed Richard Verma, who served as former US ambassador to India, as Deputy Secretary, Management and Resources.
The position to which Richard Verma has been appointed in the US is generally seen as the CEO of the powerful State Department in the US government. Voting was done to appoint Richard Verma. In this, 67 people voted for him, while 26 people voted against him.
Served as US Ambassador to India
Richard Verma previously served as the US Ambassador to India from January 2015 to January 2017. Richard Verma is currently the Chief Legal Officer and Head of Global Public Policy at Mastercard. Richard Verma has also served as the Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs during the Obama administration.
Earlier in his career, he was the National Security Advisor to US Senator Harry Reid. He served as the Democratic Whip, Minority Leader and Majority Leader of the US Senate. Verma has also served as Vice Chairman of The Asia Group, Partner and Senior Counsel at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, and Senior Counsel at Albright Stonebridge Group. He also served as Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force.
Educational Qualification of Richard Verma
Richard Verma holds a B.A. degree from Lehigh University. He completed LLM with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center and PhD from Georgetown University. He has also been honored with a number of awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal from the State Department, the International Affairs Fellowship from the Council on Foreign Relations, and the United States Air Force Meritorious Service Medal.
Richard Verma was appointed to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board and is a former member of the Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Commission. He serves as a trustee of The Ford Foundation and is a trustee on several other boards, including the National Endowment for Democracy and Lehigh University.
