United Kingdom Approved Updated Moderna Vaccine That Targets Omicron Variant

UK Approves Moderna Vaccine: The United Kingdom has approved the updated Moderna Vaccine. The UK’s drug regulator said on Monday that it has approved an updated modern vaccine against the coronavirus. It has proved effective on the Omicron variant as well as the original form of the virus. The UK became the first country to approve this modern vaccine targeting the Omicron variant.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in a statement that it had approved the vaccine for its booster dose for adults. Moderna Vaccines met UK regulatory standards for safety, quality and effectiveness. There have also been indications of a strong immune response against the Omicron variant as well as the original form of the virus.

Cases increased in Europe due to Omicron variant

MHRA CEO Jun Raine said clinical trial data showed it elicited a strong immune response against the parent virus and Omicron variants. The MHRA said the vaccine was found to be effective against two omicron subvariants, ba.4 and ba.5. Due to these variants, there was a rapid increase in new cases of corona in Europe and America.

Side Effects Similar to Moderna’s First Vaccine

This vaccine had generally mild side effects, similar to the original Moderna vaccine. June Raine said in a statement that, “The COVID-19 vaccine currently being used in the UK provides significant protection against the disease and saves lives. Corona is also evolving with new variants.” In such a situation, the benefit of this new vaccine will be available.

Corona epidemic is not over yet

Vaccines have helped reduce hospitalizations and reduce the number of deaths due to COVID-19. Most vaccines are primarily made against earlier variants of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned in July that the coronavirus pandemic was not yet over due to the spread of Omicron variant subvariants and relaxation of regulations.
