A mountain of sorrow broke down on Golapi who gave birth to a dead child, but she inspired every woman in the society with one of her decisions. Let’s know the story of Golapi of Odisha.

Who is Golapi

Golapi hails from remote Jambahali village of Nunpur panchayat in Kalahandi district of Odisha. According to UNICEF India, Golapi never got a chance to go to school. Her husband’s name is Vashishtha Rana. Golapi has two children, a 15-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son. When 35-year-old Golapi became pregnant for the third time, she went for regular antenatal check-ups following the instructions of the village health worker. During this, the auxiliary nurse and midwife identified high blood pressure as a high-risk condition during her pregnancy.

On being diagnosed with a high risk pregnancy, she was referred to the nearest community health center at Tusra, 30 km from the village, for examination. The family members took him to the district headquarters hospital, Bolangir. Here he was given medicines for high blood pressure. The ultrasound revealed that the baby was fine and weighed around 3.2 kg. Golapi returned home after four days from the hospital.

However, after a week, Golapi realized that the baby was not moving in the womb. They decided to go to the hospital but it took more than two hours to find a hired vehicle. At the same time, it took an hour to reach the Community Health Center in Tusra. From there the doctors referred Golapi to Bolangir, the district headquarters hospital. Here his caesarean section was done. Golapi gave birth to a dead child.

There were many reasons for the death of a dead child during delivery. Golapi’s high blood pressure could be a reason. Another reason could be late reaching the hospital. But how quickly would Golapi reach the community health center 30 kilometers away, that too when the road is in bad condition.
