Indian senior football team coach Igor Stimac says superstar striker Sunil Chhetri is probably playing his last season and will try to give his best in the coming months. India’s next major international tournament is to be played in the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar from January 12 to February 10 next year.
The 38-year-old Chhetri did well in the qualification tournament last year. Stimac said, “Chhetri is probably playing his last season and last Asia Cup. I am sure the coming months will be the best for Chhetri. The national team is participating in a five-day camp. Chhetri was preparing. He was shedding a few kilos which is hard to do at 38, but he was there when the club needed him, helping them out.”
India last played international matches in September. India then played out a 1–1 draw against Singapore, but lost 0–3 against Vietnam. Stimac said, “The competition to make it to the final team of the Asian Cup will go on till the end. This place is available to any Indian passport holder and not just for the player playing in ISL. We are the hosts and we will do everything possible to win the tournament.
