Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Review: Is the upgrade really done?

Galaxy M53 5G is at the top position in Samsung’s M series. A wide range of prices is available in this series of the company. This latest smartphone comes with interesting features like 120Hz refresh rate, Super AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC and vapor cooling system. It has a 108 megapixel camera. My first impressions for the device were positive. Now is the time to see how it competes with the competition in the market. Is it a good upgrade over the Galaxy M52 5G and should it be your first choice among smartphones under Rs 30,000? Let’s find out…

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G price in India

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Price in India starts from Rs.26,499. It comes in its 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The latter variant comes in 8GB RAM + 128GB storage, which costs Rs 28,499. I had its Mystic Green color unit. It also comes in Deep Ocean Blue color.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Design

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is made primarily of plastic and feels quite sturdy, but doesn’t feel too premium. At first impression, I had praised its mystic green finish. I am still retaining it as it helps it stand out from the competition. After using it for a week, I found that it gets blemishes easily, although they are not clearly visible. Being the most expensive device of the M series, the company should have included a rear case along with it in the box.

The missing accessories from the box also include the charger. Only USB Type-C to Type-C cable is available in the box. If you have a USB Type C charger, you can charge the device with it. You will need a 25W charger for fast charging. Samsung’s official charger is available for Rs. 1200.

The phone’s side mounted fingerprint scanner is easy to reach, but not so with the volume buttons. Being large, the device finds it a bit difficult to use with one hand. It has a large 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, as Galaxy M52 5G was also given. The weight of the phone is 176 grams, which according to me is easy to handle.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G Specifications and Software

MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC has been given in Samsung Galaxy M53 5G. It also has a vapor cooling chamber, which keeps the phone’s temperature under control. It has 12 5G bands with dual SIM support and also supports 4G VoLTE. The company has given auto data switch feature in it. With this, when the data of one SIM is turned off, the phone automatically switches to the data of the other SIM so that the data connection is maintained in the phone all the time.

Hybrid SIM tray has been given in this latest Samsung phone. I think the company should have come out with another variant with more storage. Through the RAM Plus feature, you can use a small part of the storage as RAM. In my 6GB variant, I was able to use 6GB of storage space as RAM. This comes in handy when you are multitasking.

The phone’s Super AMOLED Plus panel comes with full-HD+ resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. only some smartphones such as Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G, Mi 11i And Realme GT Master Edition Come with a high refresh rate AMOLED display at this price point. The screen refresh rate was set to 120Hz by default. There is an option to choose between Vivid and Natural color mode in the display settings. With this, the color temperature of the panel can be changed.

Talking about the software, the phone gets Android 12 out-of-the-box with Samsung’s OneUI 4.1 skin on top. The company has promised two years of Android OS updates and four years of security updates for the Galaxy M53 5G. OneUI is easy to use but it also comes with a lot of third party bloatware. You can uninstall most of these apps. Like Apple’s Continuity feature, you can copy and transfer text and images to other Samsung devices. But for that all devices must be signed-in with the same Samsung account. The phone also has some experimental features, including multi window, with the help of this you can run multiple apps in a resizable pop-up window.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5G performance and battery life

The performance of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is quite good for a common user. Its Super AMOLED crisp display has good viewing angles and also has many options for customization. Dolby Atmos is supported in a single speaker. The experience would have been better if there were dual speakers.

In the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G, the daily use needs are met in a smooth manner. Apps and games load quickly and multitasking is good. Its side mounted fingerprint scanner is quite accurate and there is very little chance that you have to make a second attempt to unlock the phone. The refresh rate of 120Hz also makes the UI feel super smooth.

The gaming performance of the phone is quite good. In this Asphalt 9: Legends played very well at 60Hz and there was no interruption. After 15 minutes of gaming, the battery came down to 3 percent which is normal. There was no heat in the phone.

Talking about the benchmark scores, the Samsung Galaxy M53 5G scored 424,426 points on AnTuTu. It scored 731 and 2,264 points respectively in Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core tests. These scores were lower than the Realme GT Master Edition and Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G, which are cheaper in the starting price and come with better specifications.

The battery life of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is going to impress. Its 5,000mAh battery lasts for more than a day. The phone lasted 18 hours and 24 minutes in the HD video loop test. No charger was provided with the phone, so I used a MacBook Air (2020) USB Type-C charger in it. The phone also showed fast charging, but it was difficult to say that it was charging at full capacity of 25W. The phone was charged 31 percent in half an hour and 58 percent in an hour.

Cameras of Samsung Galaxy M53 5G

Quad camera setup has been given in Samsung Galaxy M53 5G. It has a primary camera of 108 megapixels, along with an 8-megapixel ultrawide angle camera, a 2-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. In comparison, Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G also comes with the same camera setup.

The phone is very fast in focusing and takes the right exposure. Close shots are also quite impressive. However, portrait shots require some patience as it takes some time. The day-light shots of the phone are quite good and the details come out well. In the photo of the ultrawide camera, the tone of the primary camera is also found, which is a good thing. But it lacks details. Barrel distortion is very less visible in ultra wide photos.

The macro camera captures good photos and I was able to get close enough to the subject while shooting. Its low-light camera performance is quite good. However, there was a lack of details in the dark areas of the landscape shots. There was a slight improvement in Night Mode but the phone was taking 3 to 4 seconds to take a photo. Sometimes good photos were coming in it and sometimes soft results were being received. So nothing can be said for sure about it.

The 32-megapixel selfie camera of the phone captures 8-megapixel photos by default. Selfies taken during day time look great. The colors are natural. Edge detection is good in portrait shots. The low-light performance of the selfie camera is average.

Talking about video recording, it can shoot 4K videos at 30fps. The phone relies on EIS for footage stabilization. Colors look very good in the video in daylight but the video seems to be shaken. In low-light footage, I think there is a lot of disturbance. The camera app also has a Super Steady mode, but it crops the frame too much to bring in stabilization and limits the resolution to 1080p.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy M53 5G is a good upgrade over the Galaxy M52 5G. The phone looks premium and the hardware is strong. The one thing that is great about the phone is that it promises Android OS and security updates, so that it can compete with the rivals for a long time. In my view, its 6GB RAM variant proves to be more value for money. I also think that Samsung should have provided a 25W charger with it according to the price.

If you still don’t like the Galaxy M53 5G, then you can look at the Xiaomi Mi 11i HyperCharge 5G which is a much better alternative. In this, you get the more powerful Dimensity 920 SoC chipset and 120W charger is available in the box itself. Those who are looking for a good camera phone can check out the Realme 9 Pro+. The Mi 11i and the Realme GT Master Edition can also be options if your budget doesn’t allow.
