Recently, Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO, Ola Electric has also disagreed on the use of hydrogen fuel cells in vehicles. In fact, a Twitter user asked him a question about using hydrogen fuel cells in Ola’s future car, in response to which Bhavish said that hydrogen is the cleanest fuel but it is very expensive to run vehicles.
He said, “It takes a huge amount of electricity to prepare the hydrogen. The hydrogen is then converted into the fuel cell. This fuel cell, after being installed in the car, interacts with oxygen to create electricity and water. There are no emissions but the process is extremely expensive, making a hydrogen car more expensive to run than an electric car.
He said that car companies are not able to develop this technology fully due to the complex process of preparing hydrogen and the high cost. Hydrogen shortage is a concern for fuel cell cars. However, this is not the case with electric cars.
Bhavish said that the electric vehicle industry is not completely carbon free. Making batteries from lithium, nickel and cobalt also emit carbon, but they are economical compared to hydrogen. He indicated in this reply that Ola will not make hydrogen-powered cars in the future.
