There are some movies, while watching which you want to go to dreamland, the eyes start getting desperate to close and the mind refuses to think anything. This is exactly the feeling when looking at ‘worthless’. It is a remake of the 2017 Telugu film ‘Middle Class Abbai’. Starring Nani and Sai Pallavi, the film was a story of relationships, trust and difficult situations in a middle-class family. Somewhere the credit for the success of that film goes more to the performance than the story. But in its remake ‘Nikamma’, from the director, writer to the artist, everyone looked confused.

This is the story of Adi (Abhimanyu Dassani), an unemployed middle-class boy who lives with his brother (Sameer Soni). But his life changes when his brother gets married and sister-in-law Avni (Shilpa Shetty) comes home. He assumes that because of his sister-in-law, he has turned away from his brother and hates him heartily. But the situation becomes such that for a few months in a new city, he has to live with his sister-in-law. During this many things are revealed and he starts respecting Avni. Avni, who happens to be an RTO officer, gets into a big trouble because of her honesty. A goon of the city goes after his life. In such a situation, how does Adi protect his sister-in-law and does he succeed.. The story revolves around this.

The two hours and twenty eight minutes long story tries to entertain with some funny dialogues and some power-packed action sequences but proves to be inadequate. In the first half, the story seems to be completely deviant, in the second half it picks up a bit, but does not grab attention for long. Venu Sriram has written the script of the film, which is very weak. Also the dialogues written by Sanamjit Talwar have no power. There is no detail in any character, nor in emotions.

From writing, direction to technical level, there is no innovation in the film. Hari K. Vedantam’s cinematography fails to make the story strong. Manan Ajay Sagar’s editing could have been a bit tighter. The music of the film is given by Amaal Malik, Javed- Mohsin and Vipin Patwa, which is average.

On the acting front, Abhimanyu Dassani impressed as an actor with ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’ and ‘Meenakshi Sundareswarar’ but disappoints in ‘Nikamma’. Some credit for this also goes to the weak writing and direction. Shilpa Shetty has appeared on the big screen after a long time and does full justice to her character. She attracts attention in a limited amount of time. Shirley Setia had no scope but to look beautiful in this film. Actors like Sachin Khedekar, Sameer Soni and Vikram Gokhale have been completely sidelined by the director, which is disappointing.

All in all, “Nikamma” could have served up a lot more interesting if the writing had been more clearly molded, attention was paid to the textures of the characters and the editing was tighter. A dialogue from the hero villain in the film says, “Kutta pal le, magar vaham mat palana”.. After watching ‘Nikamma’, we hope that soon the producer-director also rises above the rhetoric of South films. Every remake will be successful. 1.5 stars for ‘Nikamma’ from Filmibeat.
