Croatia and the Netherlands qualified for next year’s semi-finals after winning their last Nations League match on Sunday. Croatia finished on top of Group A-1 after beating Austria 3-1. Netherlands beat Belgium 1-0 and finished on top of Group A-4 with 16 points. At the same time, the team of Nations League and defending world champion France lost 0-2 to Denmark. However, due to the loss of Austria, the French team escaped relegation, while the Austrian team reached the second tier.
Now France will face Denmark in the World Cup
It was the last match for the participating teams in the World Cup, starting on 20 November in Qatar. The Netherlands team is in the group of Ecuador and Senegal in the World Cup. France and Denmark will meet again in Qatar, which also has Tunisia and Australia in their group.
Modric gives a great start to Croatia
The World Cup could be the last international tournament for Croatia’s 37-year-old midfielder Luka Modric. He is in good form. He scored in the sixth minute to give the team the lead. Three minutes later, Austrian midfielder Christoph Baumgartner equalized with a header. After this, forward Marco Livaja (69th minute) and central defender Dejan Lovren (72nd) scored for Croatia and gave the team victory. In the World Cup, Croatia’s team is in the group of Belgium, Canada and Morocco.
Mbappe’s efforts failed in the second half
Denmark finished second in the group with 12 points, one point short of Croatia, who beat France 2–0 at home. In Denmark’s win, striker Kasper Dolberg scored in the 33rd minute and midfielder Andreas Skov Oslen in the 39th minute to give France a decisive 2-0 lead. Star striker Kylian Mbappé tried to score for France in the second half but could not get the ball to the goal post. The French team could win just one match in the group and finished third with five points. In six matches, France scored five goals, while they conceded seven.
Virgil scored for the Netherlands
Belgium needed a three-goal win but lost 0-1 to the Netherlands. Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk scored the only goal in the 73rd minute in the Netherlands’ victory. In another Group A-4 match, Robert Lewandowski’s team Poland beat Wales 1–0. Carol Swiderski scored for Poland in the 57th minute. For the first time in 64 years, the Wales team will play in the World Cup this time. His first match will be against America on 21 November. In the Nations League, the winning team of the group advances to the last four.
Hungary and Portugal need only draws for the semi-finals
The other two teams will qualify for next year’s Nations League semi-finals. In Group A-3, the winner of the match between Hungary and Italy will advance to the last four. However, Hungary only needs a draw to be on top. Whereas in Group A-2, the last league match between Spain and Portugal will be held on Tuesday. Portugal’s team is currently on top with 10 points. Spain will have to win the last four at all costs, while Portugal’s job will be done by a draw.
