Monkeypox: What is monkeypox virus, know the symptoms of infection and preventive measures

Monkeypox  Virus Infection: After monkeypox infection was reported across Europe, a case of this rare and potentially dangerous monkeypox virus has now been confirmed in the US. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this person infected with monkeypox had recently traveled to Canada and is now being treated in a hospital. The Health Department said that there is no danger to the public due to this matter. This is the first case reported in America this year. 

This year the first case of monkeypox has been reported in America. Before this, cases of monkeypox have been reported in many countries of Europe. Of these, 7 have been reported in the UK while some cases have also been reported in Portugal and Spain. At the same time, health officials in Canada said that they are investigating 13 cases.

Know what is monkeypox virus?

Monkeypox is a rare, usually mildly transmitted virus. It was commonly found in infected wild animals in parts of Africa. For the first time in the year 1958, a monkey was kept for research where this virus was first discovered. At the same time, this virus was first confirmed in humans in the year 1970. According to the UK’s NHS website, the disease is a lineage of smallpox, which often causes a rash that starts on the face.

Monkeypox virus can be transmitted by the bite of an infected animal, or by touching its blood, body fluids or fur. It is believed that it is spread through the bites of animals such as rats, rabbits and squirrels. Even if you eat undercooked meat of an animal that is infected with monkeypox, the chances of infection with this disease remain high. This virus spreads very rapidly in humans. In a way, it can be said that this is also like untouchability. You can get monkeypox if you use the clothes or bedding of an infected person. This virus can also be spread by sneezing and coughing.

What are the symptoms of monkeypox?

If you get infected with monkeypox, it usually takes between 5 to 21 days for the first symptoms to appear. These include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, shivering and tiredness. The rash usually appears on the face one to five days after experiencing these symptoms. The rash is sometimes confused with chickenpox, as it begins as raised spots that turn into small scabs filled with fluid. Symptoms usually clear up within two to four weeks and the scab falls off.

Can monkeypox kill, what is the treatment?

According to the World Health Organisation, studies in Central Africa, where people have less access to quality health care. This suggests that the disease can be fatal for one in 10 infected people. However, most patients recover within a few weeks. There is currently no specific treatment for monkeypox. Patients will need to stay in a specialist hospital so that the infection does not spread and the general symptoms can be treated.
