Early life of Mehbooba Mufti

Mufti belongs to a political family. He was born on 22 May 1959 in Anantnag district of Kashmir to Mohammad Mufti Syed and mother Gulshan Nazir. Mohammad Mufti Syed had been the home minister of the country and also the former CM of the state. When terrorists hijacked the airplane in 1989, Mehbooba Mufti’s sister Rubia was among the passengers and her father was the country’s home minister during that time.

How educated is Mehbooba Mufti?

Mufti has obtained LLB degree from Kashmir University. After the death of his father, he took charge of the PDP. Mufti was married but divorced her husband before becoming active in politics. They have two daughters, one named Iltija and the other Irtika.

Political journey of Mehbooba Mufti

In the beginning of her career, Mehbooba Mufti was with the Congress. When the Rajya Sabha elections were held in 1996, he contested from Bijbehara assembly of Jammu and Kashmir on a Congress ticket and won. During that time there was Farooq Abdullah’s government in Kashmir. In 1999, Mehbooba Mufti contested the election of MP from Srinagar but lost to Omar Abdullah. Mehbooba Mufti later resigned from the Congress and became the Vice President of the PDP.

Mehbooba won the Pahalgam seat in the 2002 Rajya Sabha elections. He won the Anantnag seat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and also in the 2014 elections. Later Mufti’s party PDP won the election in alliance with BJP and formed the government in Kashmir. Earlier her father became the Chief Minister but after his death, Mehbooba Mufti got the power of the state and she became the first woman Chief Minister.
