International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March. Every year on March 8, women empowerment is celebrated globally. Celebrating this day started in 1909.
Actually, in 1908 there was a labor movement in America. About 15,000 women participated in this labor movement, who landed on the streets of New York demanding their rights. The demand of working women was that their working hours should be reduced and pay scales should be increased. Apart from this, there was also a demand to give voting rights to women in this movement. When the voice of the working women’s movement reached the ears of the government, a year later in 1909, the Socialist Party of America announced to celebrate Women’s Day.
Why celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March?
There is a special reason for celebrating Women’s Day on 8th March. Working women in America took out a march on March 8 agitating for their rights. After which the Socialist Party announced to celebrate Women’s Day on this day. Later in 1917, during the First World War, the women of Russia went on strike for bread and peace. Later Emperor Nicholas abdicated his position and women got the right to vote. Seeing this, the women of Europe also took out rallies a few days later on March 8, supporting the peace activists. For this reason, the celebration of International Women’s Day started on 8 March. Later in 1975, the United Nations recognized International Women’s Day.
This year the theme of International Women’s Day has been ‘Embrace Equity’. It means focusing on gender equality. At the same time, the theme of Women’s Day 2022 was ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’. The theme is gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.
