Biography of Vijay Lakshmi Pandit
Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was born on 18 August 1900 in the family of Pandit Motilal Nehru in Allahabad. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was eleven years younger than Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1921, Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was married to Ranjit Sitaram Pandit, a famous lawyer from Kathiawar. The name of their child is Nayantara Sehgal.

The Government of India Act came into force in 1935 in slave India. In 1937, under this law, the Congress government was formed in many provinces, in which Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was made the cabinet minister of the United Provinces of Uttar Pradesh. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was the first woman to get a cabinet post during the British rule. In 1937 she was appointed Minister in the Department of Local Self-Administration and Public Health. She remained in this position till 1947.

Apart from this, from 1940 to 1942 she was the President of the All India Women’s Conference. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was also the first woman president to lead an Indian delegation to the United Nations. In 1947, Vijay Lakshmi Pandit was appointed the world’s first woman ambassador, who served as ambassador to three capitals. She became the first woman in the world to be elected President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1953. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit passed away in 1990.
