As reported by Yonhap news agency, Hyundai Motor Group entered the green vehicle market in July 2009 by launching a hybrid model of its Avante sub-compact SUV. South Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai Motor recorded cumulative sales of 5,56,854 units, with the rest of the cars being Kia.
Hyundai Motor’s Grandeur Hybrid, which was launched in 2013, was the best selling green car. Its cumulative sales reached approximately 1,84,000 units. Kia Motor’s Niro Hybrid sold around 1,26,500 units, followed by Sonata Hybrid’s sales of around 98,300 units.
Hyundai Motor Group said sales of eco-friendly vehicles are likely to increase further amid the growing popularity of electric vehicles. Overall, Hyundai Motor’s second quarter net profit jumped 56 percent.
Net profit rose from 1.98 trillion won to 3.08 trillion won ($2.34 billion) during the three months April to June this year. In a span of six months, Hyundai sold around 20 lakh vehicles. The company achieved 43 per cent of its sales target of 40 lakh units for the year.
