Sometimes tutors can ask you to create a PowerPoint presentation as your home assignment. It may be confusing and challenging if you don’t have a checklist of steps that you need to take to do it. Thus, in this blog post, I’d like to share with you actionable tips on how to create a winning powerpoint presentation.
#1 – Create a Plan of Your PowerPoint Presentation
The best way to become a master in any field is to master the tools you are going to use. In the same way, to become a great presenter, you need to learn the tools you will be using. So, the first thing to do is to create a plan. What is the main purpose of your presentation? If it is to introduce a product, this is easier to analyze. However, if you are giving a lecture about an important topic in college, then you need to think of it as a stand-up comedy show.
- Think of the order of the list of slides that you will be presenting.
- Then, take some time to come up with one or more key points to make the whole presentation funny, entertaining, and informative.
- The next step is to go through the list of points.
This is where your presentation really gets challenging. No wonder you may think “Can anyone do my powerpoint presentation for me like a writing expert?”. You need to organize the slide deck in such a way that these points resonate with your audience. One example is to visualize two-dimensional characters: the teacher and the student. This is where you can visualize the flow of the slide deck. See if there is one slide that is important for them to hear.
The next thing is to organize the slide deck in such a way that the key messages of each slide get communicated clearly. You know the importance of presenting clear, concise, and powerful ideas. You should get your message across to the audience in the most impactful way.
#2 – Outline Your Presentation
The great news about this step is that it is super easy. Here are some simple ideas that you can use to structure your slides in a winning way.
- First, make sure that each slide has at least three elements (graphs, icons, images, videos, etc.).
- The first slide should have a major theme. You can use a format that includes an introduction, one main point, and an action.
- All other slides are used for demonstrations, charts, visuals, etc.
- The last slide is used for summaries.
You can use this structure as a template. However, don’t try to copy it exactly. That will be a surefire way to fail. Instead, use this template as a guide.

Before you start creating slides, I’d like to ask you a question. What are you going to show your audience with the powerpoint?
If you don’t know the answer to this question, then you need to do some more research. You will create slides with the intent of achieving one of two purposes:
- convey the information to your audience.
- motivate your audience.
Both of these are important to the success of your presentation. However, I am going to focus on the second purpose here. You need to try to motivate your audience.
How can you motivate the audience? The best way is to use humor and entertainment. Why am I talking about humor and entertainment?
Well, when I talk about using humor to make the audience laugh or smile, it sounds a little bit out there. However, that is what good presentation strategy is all about. It allows the presenter to connect with the audience in a unique way. In other words, it makes the audience forget about their cares and worries. People love to be amused.
#4 – Add Neat Charts to Your Presentation
Some teachers ask students to present multiple topic ideas in one slide. The easiest way to come up with a good organization for this slide deck is to draw a graph. In this case, there is a graphic organizer and a list in the form of a directed graph. The graph is one of the first things that you should visualize for your next presentation.
Thus, make sure to draw a graph for your next presentation. Don’t worry about your designer skills. You can use Canva or other similar tools.
With the graph, you can easily visualize what is most important to mention and the order in which you will be presenting this information.
#5 – Use the Audience in Your Presentation
Remember, you’re the one who’s talking to the audience. You’re the one who’s the focus of their attention. You’re the one who has the responsibility to produce a professional presentation. Therefore, I strongly suggest you turn to your audience when creating your powerpoint presentation.
Every slide should be designed to represent the audience. A great way to do this is to base your slides on real people. For example, a famous keynote speaker uses a picture of someone who used to work at his company.
By using real people, you will be creating a personal connection with your audience. This personal connection is what will make your presentation believable and memorable.
So, if you want to connect with your audience, you’ll need to find a way to speak to each of them. This means you’ll need to portray your material in a way that is interesting and engaging. This also means you’ll need to respond to questions and comments the audience makes.
Keep in mind that you should be speaking directly to each and every one of them. You don’t need to present some great, complicated idea to the audience.
Just ask them a question and answer their comments or concerns. This will make them feel like you actually care about their opinions and they will remember your presentation.
#6 – Include Proper Context
Providing proper context to your content is something that you need to consider before you present any information.
There are three important questions that you need to answer before you present your content:
Who is the audience? What is the problem that you’re solving? What resources are you going to use to solve the problem?
#7 – Review Your Information Before You Present It
Review your slides with a peer or a family member. It’s important that you have a conversation with your peer before presenting your slides. This conversation will help you understand how to present the information on your slides in a better way.
