Biography of Mehbooba Mufti

Mehbooba Mufti was born on 22 May 1959 in Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir. His father’s name was Mohammad Mufti Syed and mother is Gulshan Nazir. Mehbooba Mufti comes from a political family, her father Mohammad Mufti was the Home Minister of the country, as well as the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1989, terrorists hijacked an airplane. The demand for the release of a notorious terrorist was made in exchange for the passengers. Mehbooba Mufti’s sister Rubiya was also among those passengers. Political Journey of Mehbooba Mufti

Mehbooba Mufti started her career in politics with Congress. In the 1996 Rajya Sabha elections, he contested on a Congress ticket from the Bijbehara Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir and won. In those days, there was a government of Farooq Abdullah in Jammu and Kashmir and Mehbooba Mufti was leading the opposition in Parliament.

Later in 1999, Mehbooba Mufti contested the election of MP from Srinagar but lost to Omar Abdullah. The PDP was formed after differences with the Congress. Mehbooba Mufti resigned from Congress and became the Vice President of PDP.
