Captain Savita Poonia’s excellent goalkeeping helped the Indian women’s hockey team beat Argentina 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out in their FIH Pro League match on Saturday. On the other hand, the men’s team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out.
India and Argentina were tied 3-3 in the women’s match till the stipulated time. Argentina’s five attempts in the penalty shoot-out saw only one goal. Savita Poonia defends four strikes very beautifully. Two out of four chances were converted into goals for India. Sonika for India and Neha Goyal, playing her 100th international match, scored the goal in the shoot-out.
Granato Victoria scored for Argentina. Earlier Lalremsai scored a field goal in the third minute. Gurjit Kaur scored from penalty corners in the 36th and 50th minutes. For Argentina, Agustina Corgiellini scored on penalty corners in the 21st and 44th minutes and penalty strokes in the 36th minute.
With this win, India have 24 points from 11 matches in the FIH Pro League. India is at number three in the table. On the other hand, Olympic silver medalist and world number two Argentina is on top with 39 points from 15 matches. With this victory, the Indian team has got a boost in the preparations for the World Cup to be held in the Netherlands from July 1 to 17.
