Border Fight: About 100 soldiers on both sides died in the ongoing border fight on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan. With this, the possibility of further deepening of the long-running enmity between the two countries has increased. Armenian Prime Minister Nikole Pashinyan said on Tuesday that 49 Armenian soldiers were killed in late night attacks in Azerbaijan. At the same time, Azerbaijan has said that 50 of its soldiers have been killed.
There was a ceasefire between the two countries mediated by Russia and under the ceasefire agreement, about 2,000 Russian soldiers are stationed as peacekeepers in the area. Russia has called on the two former Soviet countries to maintain friendly relations.
Azerbaijan attacked with cannons and drones
According to the Defense Ministry of Armenia, Azerbaijan’s army carried out attacks with artillery and drones. The ministry said fighting continued during the day despite Russia’s quick mediation effort for a ceasefire. He said the shelling had subsided but Azerbaijan’s troops were still trying to advance into Armenian territory.
Firing on army posts of Armenia
Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Armenian forces opened fire on army posts in three districts of the country, and Armenian attackers laid landmines in these areas. It said Azerbaijan’s forces suffered an unspecified number of casualties and “strongly retaliated”.
India’s stand in the fight between the two countries
Meanwhile, India on Tuesday appealed to both the countries to end aggression and immediately ceasefire, saying that no problem can be solved by military conflict. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India believes that bilateral disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue.
The decades-old battle over Nagorno-Karabakh
It is worth noting that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia has been going on for decades over Nagorno-Karabakh. Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan, but it has been under the control of forces supported by Armenia since a separatist war ended in 1994. In the year 2020, more than 6,600 people died in the 6-week war between the two.
