The International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation is observed annually on 6 February. The day was celebrated for the first time on 6 February 2003.
The day was inaugurated by the former President of Nigeria, Stella Obasanjo. She was also a spokesperson for the Zero Tolerance Campaign against Female Genital Mutilation. Stella, the former President of Nigeria, had announced to celebrate this day for the first time on February 6 in the year 2003. The United Nations also accepted this day.
The United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Children’s Fund launched a joint campaign against female genital mutilation in 2007. Later in the year 2012, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring February 6 as the International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation.
Many evil practices against women have been going on for centuries. It adversely affects the mental and physical health of women. Also harmful for their social status. There is a need to end these evil practices and give equal rights and respect to women in the society. Women are just like men. That’s why they should be given respect like men.
