Fed Cup: Tejinderpal Singh Toor in shotput and Rani won titles in javelin throw

Reigning Asian Games champion shotputter Tejinderpal Singh Toor and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist javelin thrower Annu Rani won gold medals in their respective categories on the second day of the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships.

The 30-year-old Annu, however, could not find her personal best and shot 59.24m but that was enough to qualify for the upcoming Asian Championships and Asian Games. Uttar Pradesh’s Annu has a personal best performance of 63.82m which is also a national record. The qualifying standard for the Asian Championships to be held from July 12 to 16 is 54.73m while for the Hangzhou Games it is 56.46m.

Asian record holder Toor won the gold with a throw of 20.42m. His best performance is 21.49m. Punjab’s Toor crossed the Asian Games qualifying mark of 19 metres. Delhi’s Sahib Singh and Punjab’s Karanvir Singh also cleared the 19m hurdle. Odisha’s Srabani Nanda won the women’s 100m race in 11.57 seconds though she could not cross the Asian Championship qualifying mark of 11.44 seconds. Amiya Kumar Malik of Odisha emerged victorious in the men’s category, clocking 10.31 seconds. The qualifying figure for the Asian Championship and the Asian Games is 10.19 seconds.

In the women’s 400m, Maharashtra’s Aishwarya Mishra won in 52.57 seconds but was later disqualified for breaking the lane. Priya Mohan of Karnataka, who finished second, was declared the winner, while Ramesh of Tamil Nadu won the men’s title. Both qualified for the Asian Championship. Priya filed a protest before the technical panel and the decision came in her favor.
