EV Fire: Poor battery cooling system is causing problems in electric scooters.

The report further stated that due to lack of ventilation in the battery compartment, the cells of the battery get overheated and start burning, which is the main reason behind the fire in the scooter. The team also said that many brands are offering minimum fire protection to their electric two-wheelers and cutting costs instead of prioritizing vehicle safety.

The team has told that this is a preliminary report of the investigation and a final report will be submitted to the government in the next few days. The government has shared the recommendations of a team of experts with electric two-wheeler manufacturers and questioned why legal action should not be taken against them.

Last month, Nitin Gadkari had warned electric scooter makers that they would be fined heavily and all defective vehicles would be ordered to be recalled if cases of fire broke out in electric scooters. The transport ministry is soon set to implement quality centric guidelines for electric vehicles, which will be released in August 2022.

Let us tell you that some people have also lost their lives due to fire in electric vehicles. Cases of fire in Pure EV, Ola e-scooters, Okinawa and Jitendra e-scooters have been reported in different parts of the country. Several manufacturers have recalled entire batches of perishable scooters.

BIS certification applied for Lithium battery

Recently the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced new performance standards to determine the quality of lithium batteries. The national standards-setting body has published “Performance Standards for Electronic Vehicle Batteries” to ensure the safety of electric vehicle consumers.

Now companies manufacturing Lithium-ion batteries for Electric Vehicles (EVs) will have to comply with the standards laid down under “ISO 17855: 2022”. These standards have been made in line with “ISO 12405-4: 2018” .

As per the new lithium battery standard, now electric vehicle makers will have to test the batteries separately to check the reliability, charging capacity, ability to work in different environments and temperatures. The new standards also inform the procedure for testing lithium-ion batteries.
