With the support of the family, Lalita enrolled in the Madras College of Engineering. During that time there were no hostels for girls in the engineering college. Two more girls enrolled in engineering and all three, including Lalita, stayed in hostels and completed their degrees in 1943. With this she became the first woman engineer of India.

A. Lalita’s career

Later Lalita did apprenticeship at the Railway Workshop in Jamalpur, Bihar. Then worked as an engineering assistant in the Central Standard Organization of India, Shimla. She also passed the graduate ship exam from the Institution of Engineers in London in the UK and also joined her father in research work.

Along with working at several locations, A Lalita became a part of the generator project for India’s largest Bhakra Nangal Dam. It is one of his most famous works. In 1964, she was invited to organize the first International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists program. A Lalita died in 1979 at the age of 60.
