Anandibai Joshi is the first female doctor of India. Anandiben Joshi was born on 31 March 1865 in a Pune landlord family. Her childhood name was Yamuna but after marriage she was called as Anandi in her in-laws’ house. These days, after marriage, along with the surname of the girls, only the full name used to change.

Anandi was married at the age of just 9. Her husband Gopalrao was 16 years older than Anandi. Gopal Rao, 25, married Anandi after the death of his first wife. There was a great age gap between the two but Gopalrao and his family loved Anandi very much. At the age of 14, Anandi gave birth to a child. But his newborn was suffering from some serious illness, due to which he died within 10 days.

The death of Anandi’s child was a shock. He thought that if his child was not sick, he would never leave the world. With this thought, Anandi decided that now she will not allow any child to die of illness. After that she put her desire to become a doctor in front of her husband. The husband supported Anandi and sent her to study in a missionary school. This move of Gopalrao and Anandi was strongly criticized by the society and family members. But Anandi continued her studies.
First woman to get MD degree
Gopal Rao collected all the information about studying medicine in America and sent Anandi to the Women’s Medical College in Pennsylvania to study medicine. To get into college, Anandi sold all her jewelry. Some people helped him and also gave money.

At the age of 19, Anandiben completed her MD degree. Anandiben Joshi became the first Indian woman to earn an MD degree. After completing her studies, she returned home and started working as a doctor in charge in the women’s ward of Albert Edward Hospital in the princely state of Kolhapur. However, during practice, she succumbed to tuberculosis and at the age of 22, Anandibai died on 26 February 1887.
