CWG: 35-year-old Saurav Ghoshal creates history, wins singles in squash in Commonwealth

35-year-old Sourav Ghoshal, India’s veteran player in squash, has won a bronze medal. This is India’s first medal at any Commonwealth Games in Squash in both the women’s and men’s singles event. Sourav became the first Indian player to win a medal in the squash singles event at the Commonwealth Games. Earlier, India has won a medal in squash at the Commonwealth Games, but in the doubles event. This is only the second medal for Sourav in all Commonwealth Games combined. Earlier, Sourav won a silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Apart from this, he has won seven medals in Asian Games. These include one gold, one silver and five bronze. Also, Sourav has won one gold (2022) and two silver medals (2004, 2016) in the World Doubles Championship. Squash was included in the Commonwealth Games in 1998. This is India’s first medal in squash singles in seven Commonwealth Games in 24 years since then. Because of this, this victory became even more special for Sourav. Sourav had defeated Shamil Vakil of Sri Lanka 3-0 in the first match at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. In the first match, Shamil Vakil of Sri Lanka was defeated 3-0. Sourav then defeated David Ballargion of Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. Sourav then defeated Greg Lobban of Scotland 3-1 in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, India’s Saurav Ghosal was defeated by New Zealand’s Paul Cole 3-0. Now Sourav has won the bronze medal match.
