CWG 2022: Deepak Poonia wins gold for the first time, Pakistan wrestler gets final…

Wrestler Deepak Poonia has given India the fourth gold in wrestling. He defeated Mohammad Inam of Pakistan 3-0 in the final of the 86 kg weight category. In this way Deepak captured the gold. This is Deepak’s first medal in the Commonwealth Games and he has started with a straight gold.

Deepak started the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a bang. In the first match, Deepak defeated Matthew Oxenham of New Zealand 10-0 on the basis of technical proficiency. This match was won by Deepak in 3 minutes 22 seconds.

After this, in the second match i.e. quarter-finals, Deepak also defeated Sheikhu Kasegbama of Sierra Leone 10-0 on the basis of technical proficiency. Deepak won this match in 1 minute 33 seconds. In wrestling, in the semi-finals of the 86 kg weight category, Alexander Moore of Canada was defeated 3-1 on the basis of points. The match lasted for a full six minutes.

Deepak faced Pakistan’s Mohammad Inam in the final. Inam had defeated Edward Lessing of South Africa 5-3 in the semi-finals. So the match was expected to be interesting. However, one of the Pakistani wrestlers did not go ahead of Indian wrestler Deepak Poonia. Deepak won the match 3-0 on the basis of points. Deepak Poonia won a silver medal in the World Championships 2019 apart from gold in the Commonwealth Games (2022). He won silver in 2018 and gold in 2019 at the World Junior Wrestling Championships. Deepak has two silver and two bronze in the Asian Championships. Deepak had missed out on a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. He was defeated in the last 30 seconds by Miles Amine of San Marino.

India has so far won six medals in wrestling at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Apart from Deepak, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik also won gold medals. At the same time, Anshu Malik got silver and Divya Kakran-Mohit Grewal got bronze medal. This is Anshu’s first Commonwealth Games and she started with silver. At the same time, this is Divya’s second medal in the Commonwealth Games. Earlier, Divya also won bronze in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. With six medals in wrestling, India’s total medal tally has gone up to 26. These include nine gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals. India is currently ranked fifth in the medal tally.
