CWG 2022 Live: India lead 1-0 in badmindt team event

India has won its second medal in judo at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Judoka Vijay Yadav defeated Petros Kristodulides of Cyprus in the bronze medal match in the men’s 60 kg weight category. Vijay defeated Petros with Ippone. There are three types of scoring in Judo. It is called ippon, waza-ari and yuko. Ippon occurs when the player throws to the player in front and does not allow him to rise. A full point is awarded when it is fired and the player wins. That’s how Vijay won. Judo players are called ‘judoka’.

Prior to Vijay, Sushila Devi had won a silver medal in the women’s 48 kg category. He had to face defeat in the final. Vijay’s journey in these Commonwealth Games has been spectacular. In the pre-quarterfinals, he defeated Winsley Gangaya of Mauritius.

After this, Vijay had to face defeat in the quarter-finals. He was defeated by Joshua Katz of Australia. After this, Vijay made it to the bronze medal match through the repechage round. In the first repechage match, Vijay defeated Dylan Munro of Scotland and then defeated Petros of Cyprus to win the bronze medal.

With the medals of Sushila and Vijay, India’s total medal tally in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games has reached eight. India has so far won three gold, three silver and two bronze. Before Sushila, Bindiyarani Devi and Sanket Sargar won silver in weightlifting. At the same time, Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalnirunga and Achinta Sheuly won gold in weightlifting. In Judo, Sushila Devi won the silver medal in the 48 kg weight category. Sushila Devi’s medal is India’s first medal today. In the final, Sushila was trapped by Mikaela Wheboi of South Africa through an arm lock and knocked down. After this, Sushila kept trying to get rid of the lock on the mat itself for some time. In such a situation, the referee declared Whitboi of South Africa as the winner.
