Before Achinta and Jeremy, India had won four medals in weightlifting on Saturday. Among women, Mirabai Chanu won gold and Bindiyarani Devi won silver in their respective weight categories. At the same time, Sanket Sargar won silver and Gururaja Pujari won bronze medal in their respective weight categories in men. India is currently ranked sixth in the medal tally of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada are ahead of India. Achinta Sheuli finished on top of the snatch round. He lifted 137 kg in the first attempt, 140 kg in the second attempt and 143 kg in the third attempt. His weight of 143 kg is also his personal best in the snatch round. Malaysia’s Hidayat Mohamed is second in the snatch round. Achinta Sheuli had maintained a 5kg lead over Hidayat after the snatch round. Achinta made a Commonwealth record twice in the snatch round. Achinta broke the Commonwealth record by lifting 140 kg in the snatch round. No one had lifted so much weight in this round before. At the same time, Achinta further improved her performance and record by lifting 143 kg in the third attempt. After this, in the clean and jerk round, Achinta lifted a weight of 166 kg in the first attempt, which is also a Commonwealth Games record. After this, in the second attempt, he tried to lift 170 kg, but failed. In the third attempt, he again lifted 170 kg and improved his own record. Achinta lifted a total of 313 kg, including 143 kg in the snatch round and 170 kg in the clean and jerk round, which is also a record in the Commonwealth Games. Achinta now holds Commonwealth Games record in snatch round, Commonwealth record in clean and jerk round and also Commonwealth record in total weight.

Achinta got tough competition from Malaysia’s Hidayat
Achinta was followed by Hidayat Mohamed of Malaysia in second place. Hidayat lifted a weight of 138 kg in the snatch round. After this, in the first attempt in clean and jerk, he lifted the weight of 165 kg. Achinta had lifted a total of 313 kg in snatch, clean and jerk.

Hidayat had to lift 176 kg in clean and jerk to overtake it and lift 314 kg. He also tried to attempt 176kg in his second and third attempts, but failed. In this way Achinta Sheuli won the gold medal. Achinta, 20, had earlier won a silver medal in the 73 kg weight category at the 2021 Tashkent Junior World Weightlifting Championships. At the same time, he won gold in the 73 kg weight category at the 2019 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and the 2021 Tashkent Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. In the last edition of the Commonwealth Games, Indian weightlifters had won nine medals, including five gold. Then Team India was the best team in weightlifting.
